After the tragic death of Janifer Taylor’s daughter, Dawn Peterson, on December 17, 2021, Next Day After was founded in Dawn’s honor in December 2024. As a survivor of gun violence, Janifer created the organization in response to the rising toll of trauma affecting mothers and families in Southeast Queens.
After recognizing a gap in meaningful, ongoing support for mothers impacted by gun violence, she began hosting informal peer support sessions, monthly food pantry distributions and health and wellness activities at American Legion Post #483 in Rosedale, New York.
The overwhelming response made it clear that this work needed formal structure and long-term investment. Today, Next Day After is officially incorporated as a New York State not-for-profit, serving as a community anchor for healing, support and advocacy.
Next Day After, exists to promote healing, resilience and empowerment among families affected by gun violence and traumatic events in underserved communities. We provide trauma-informed, culturally relevant wellness programming that supports the emotional, physical, and mental well-being of parents, children seniors and caregivers.
